This paper focuses on the practical application of technology in an Accounting context. Students experience a hands-on approach to the use of spreadsheets, relational databases, and analytics software through practical exercises.

The paper will involve a combination of lectures, labs, readings, in-class team activities, and significant hands-on use of relevant technologies. We will apply critical thinking and technology skills to real-life accounting problems. Students will engage with technology each week during computer lab workshops.

We will complete a number of in-class activities and short cases during lecture and lab meetings throughout the term. Some of these activities will be completed in teams. The teams will have the opportunity to work together during the entire term, and I am hopeful that a strong sense of team spirit will develop.

This paper is designed to meet the needs of students contemplating careers in accounting, auditing, consulting, etc. The course is essential for students who intend to become members of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) or CPA Australia. Information technology knowledge and skills are demanded by today's employers and are very important to accounting professional bodies.

Overall, we will learn how current technologies change how data are collected, stored, manipulated, analyzed, reported and audited.

Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and competence in using computers in the business environment by
    • Demonstrating competence in the use of MS Excel.
    • Understanding the fundamentals of relational databases and being able to create and query a relational database.
    • Demonstrating ability with analytics technology.
    • Demonstrating the ability to draw on and assimilate information from a variety of sources to successfully understand and succeed in a business environment.
