Agri-food is the largest economic sector in the world. More than two billion people work in global agri-food systems. Global agri-food supply has increased significantly in the past decades. While ensuring the sufficient supply is not able to address some emerging challenges within the global agri-food systems (e.g. sustainability and food safety issues). Meanwhile the agri-food system is extremely complicated. Its professionals need to comprehensively understand their local and international agri-food systems and to develop effective strategies to deal with those emerging challenges.

This paper will introduce students to theories and recent empirical findings regarding the agri-food system. They will also be trained to map local and international agri-food systems. By the end of the paper, the students will be able to use systematic and developing thinking to analyse agri-food systems.
