Research and development is essential to develop an efficient and sustainable aquaculture industry. This papers provides students with a knowledge and working experience of a number of modern laboratory techniques that help researchers understand the physiology of farmed organisms to inform and innovate husbandry practise. This has direct application to maintaining welfare standards and improving overall industry performance. This paper will be of particular importance to biology students who have an interest in post graduate studies or a career in research.

Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:

  • Learning outcomes
    1. Demonsrate a good understanding the important research technologies that are being used to understand the bottlenecks in the aquaculture industry.
    2. Explain how these modern research methods are being used to understand aspects of organism physiology,monitor changes in the enviroment and discover new bioactive compounds.
    3. Describe how research is helping the aquaculture industry to improve the nutrition, stress management, growth and health of farmed species.
    4. Present information both orally and in written form obtained from the relevant priamary literature and develop the ability to perform a range of practical skills.

The dates indicated for assessment procedures will normally be adhered to. Any changes to the dates will be made in consultation with the class at least one week prior to the original date. Attendance of the laboratory sessions are an essential element of the course and must be completed in order to pass the course. Medical certificates must be presented for any test and/or laboratory missed.
