An introduction to the foundations of biology, including the structure and functioning of cells, evolution, the origins and diversity of life, and a tour of the major forms of life and their defining characteristics.

NCEA Level 3 Biology (or equivalent) is a desirable preparation for taking this paper.

This paper is taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, and laboratory classes.

Please note that laboratory classes start in the second week of semester and are an essential part of the course.

Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:

  • Describe the key features of prokaryote and eukaryote cell structure and function, including cellular respiration and photosynthesis;
    Linked to the following assessments:
  • Describe the theory of evolution and the mechanisms that give rise to it, including descent with modification, the evolution of populations and speciation;
    Linked to the following assessments:
  • Discuss, from an evolutionary viewpoint, current understanding and evidence for the origins, history and diversity of life;
    Linked to the following assessments:
  • Describe the tree of life, including the three domains of life, and the features of the major living groups within these including Bacteria, Archaea, protists, fungi, plants and animals

Your overall paper grade will follow the standardised University grading scheme: A+ 90-100%, A 85-89%, A- 80-84%, B+ 75-79%, B 70-74%, B- 65-69%, C+ 60-64%, C 55-59%, C- 50-54%; D 40-49%, E 0-39%. A pass grade (C-) for this paper implies that a student has a minimal acceptable level of competency in the learning outcomes listed above.

Those intending to major in biology (or any other science subject) will also find Writing for Science: a practical handbook for science, engineering and technology students (3rd edition) by H. Silyn-Roberts (2012, pub. Pearson) very useful. (Or, if you have a copy, A student handbook for writing in biology (2nd edition), by K. Knisely (2005, pub. Sinauer/Freeman) will be helpful.)

Students with little prior experience of biology should also use Getting Ready for Biology (L. Garrett, 2007, Pearson).
