Paper Description
This paper develops students' foundation knowledge in te koiora tangata (human biology), with an emphasis on tissues, organs and body systems. It covers the anatomy of te tinana (the human body) including respiratory, cardiovascular, reproductive, urinary, digestive, endocrine, muscular, skeletal, immune and nervous systems. The paper will explore how the structure and function of these systems relate to health and disease enabling students to relate their understanding of human biology to Hauora, sport science, biomedical science and population health.
Paper Structure
Each week we will cover a different aspect of human anatomy and physiology.
Due to the current Red alert level settings we will have an Introductory lecture for the paper on Monday 7 March. For social distancing requirements students with last names beginning with A-M will attend the introductory lecture from 1-1:30 pm and students with last names beginning with N-Z will attend from 2- 2:30. Please scan in, wear a mask and socially distance.
Following this for the rest of the trimester all subsequent lectures will online only. These will be recorded, and available online via Panopto on a Monday. There is a Moodle quiz each week (assessed) starting the second week of semester, based on the lecture topic for that week.
Labs and tutorials will run alternate weeks, starting in the second week of semester. Students will use their understanding of anatomy and physiology from lectures and apply this to human health, performance and the functioning of a healthy human body.
The external: internal assessment ration is 30:70
The internal assessement component of the course consists of:
- 6 x 2-hour laboratory sessions and 5 x 2- hour workshops worth 50% of the course mark. The best 10 out of the 11 marks for the laboratory and tutorials sessions will contribute to the 50%.
- 2 x online moodle tests collectively worth 10% of the course mark (5% each)
- 10 x moodle quizzes (one every week for each topic covered), collectively worth 10% of the course mark (1% each)
Each laboratory session will consist of:
- An online moodle quiz to be completed prior to attending the lab (pre-lab quiz)
- Completion of the appropriate assessment questions/material in the laboratory manual (to be purchased)
Each workshop will consist of:
- An in-class group assessment task e.g. debates, opinion pieces, group work, presentations, problem-solving, group discussions etc... Marking rubrics and guidelines will be provided for these.
Each moodle quiz will consist of:
- Approximately 10 questions (multichoice and short answer)
Important note for international students: For international students in New Zealand under student visas, regular attendance is part of your visa obligation and is checked as a requirement on the University under the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students, to which the University is a signatory. Academic staff are formally required to monitor attendance in classes and submission of compulsory assessment events/items and to report to Waikato International in the event that any problem with irregular attendance or non-submission is not resolved.

Assessment
The dates indicated for assessment procedures will normally be adhered to. Any changes in the dates will be made in consultation with the class, at least one week prior to the original date.
Your overall paper grade will follow the standardised University grading scheme: A+ 90-100%, A 85-89%, A- 80-84%, B+ 75-79%, B 70-74%, B- 65-69%, C+ 60-64%, C 55-59%, C- 50-54%; D 40-49%, E 0-39%. A pass grade (C-) for this paper implies that a student has a minimal acceptable level of competency in the learning outcomes listed above.
Assessment Components
The internal assessment/exam ratio (as stated in the University Calendar) is 70:30. The final exam makes up 30% of the overall mark.

This paper has a Moodle page (http://elearn.waikato.ac.nz) where you will be able to access pdfs of lecture notes and powerpoints, lecture recordings, and assessment materials. There are also discussion forums where you can both ask and answer questions.

Workload
Contact hours: Four hours per week (1 x 2-hour lecture, 1 x 2-hour tutorial/laboratory session) plus four hours per week for laboratory and tutorial preparation, assessment and independent study, plus exam preparation.
