Paper Description
The aim of this paper is to familiarize students with the structure and function of proteins, nucleic acids and lipids (as fundamental molecules of life). Students will be introduced to molecular techniques used to study these molecules and gain an appreciation of how they interact in living organisms in health and disease.
Paper Structure
This paper is taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, and laboratory classes. Details of lecture and lab content are provided in the attached paper timetable. Please note that laboratory classes start in the first week of semester and are an essential part of the course.
Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:
Assessment
The dates indicated for assessment procedures will normally be adhered to. Any changes in the dates will be made in consultation with the class, at least one week prior to the original date.
Overall assessment comprises of: 20% on performance in the practical course and 80% on online Assignments 1-3.
The practical course assessment comprise: on-line pre-lab quizzes that must be completed prior to lab attendance. The lab assessments (for the five labs) will be 5% per practical (15% in total). The pre-lab quizzes 1% per quiz ( 5% in total).
Any queries relating to assessment should be directed to Dr Ryan Martinus.
Assessment Components
The internal assessment/exam ratio (as stated in the University Calendar) is 100:0. There is no final exam.
Required and Recommended Readings
Required Readings
The required textbook is Garrett and Grisham Biochemistry 5 th edition. Second hand copies of the previous editions of this or of Stryer "Biochemistry" (4th Edition) may be available and are suitable.
A copy of the laboratory manual can be purchased from the Campus Copy Shop. Lecture powerpoints will be on the course Moodle site.
Online Support
This paper has a Moodle page (http://elearn.waikato.ac.nz) where you will be able to access pdfs of lecture powerpoints, lecture recordings, and assessment materials. There are also discussion forums where you can both ask and answer questions.
PLEASE NOTE: Moodle will be used for class notices etc and it is your responsibility to check the site regularly. Instructions provided on Moodle and in lectures are considered to be given to the class as a whole.
