This paper will equip students with a working understanding of advanced techniques used in biochemical research to probe the structure, interactions and biological functions of proteins from the molecular to the organism level. Topics will include bioinformatic methods of proteins analysis, in vitro and in vivo characterization, structure determination and protein engineering. Students will engage in active learning to gain information about various methods used in biochemical research, and then apply these methods to a biochemical system of their choice through a series of guided workshops. They will then synthesize this knowledge to design a research program and write a proposal.

The paper will comprise ten 2 hr tutorials and workshops, each of which will contribute 5% of the course mark (50% total). Throughout the course, students will work towards designing a research program focused on investigating a protein of their choice, which would implement the techniques discussed in tutorials. A written research proposal outlining their program will be submitted for assessment at the end of the course (40%) and presented in a final oral seminar (10%).

Course work: final exam ratio is 100:0

Course work consists of completing a written research proposal on a particular topic (40% of final course mark) and pitching this proposal in a short seminar (10% of final course mark).

The remaining 50% of the final course mark will be based on seminar presentations during in-class discussions and completion of tasks during workshops.
