Paper Description

Edit Paper Description Content

Students organise themselves into and work in small groups throughout the paper. They will contribute to all aspects of building a medium-sized piece of software: developing requirements and specification; designing the system structure and user-interface; carrying out documentation, and implementation.

The learning outcomes for this paper are linked to Washington Accord graduate attributes WA1-WA11. Explanation of the graduate attributes can be found at: https://www.ieagreements.org/assets/Uploads/Documents/IEA-Graduate-Attributes-and-Professional-Competencies-2021.1-Sept-2021.pdf

Paper Structure

Edit Paper Structure Content

The first two weeks deliver the principles required for ethical and secure execution of this software engineering project. It also provides an opportunity for students to meet with each other and form groups, and learn about the projects available. The weeks thereafter will be dedicated to making progress with the project, communicating this to the instructors (via periodic individual reports and group meetings), and producing the expected deliverables. Group meetings will take place weekly.

Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:

  • Work with a client to understand their domain and apply technology to solve a problem in that domain (WA10)
    Linked to the following assessments:
    Deliverable 1: Requirements (2)
  • Communicate that problem and their solution clearly, to both a technical and a non-technical audience (WA9)
    Linked to the following assessments:
    Deliverable 1: Requirements (2)
    Group Presentation (5)
  • Use a systematic and disciplined process to analyse, design, build and test their software solution (WA3)
    Linked to the following assessments:
    Deliverable 1: Requirements (2)
    Deliverable 2: Design (3)
    Deliverable 3: Test Plan (4)
  • Understand how to work in a software development team (WA8)
    Linked to the following assessments:
    Group Presentation (5)
  • Understand the importance of regular reflection to improve their work practices and processes (WA11)
    Linked to the following assessments:

Assessment

Edit Assessments Content

Assessment will be based on progress reported in the deliverables for requirements, design and test plan, a quiz on the lecture material and the final group presentation.

Samples of your work may be required as part of the Engineering New Zealand accreditation process for BE(Hons) degrees. Any samples taken will have the student name and ID redacted. If you do not want samples of your work collected then please email the engineering administrator, Natalie Shaw (natalie.shaw@waikato.ac.nz), to opt out.
