This paper consists of a programme of individual study and assessment undertaken by the student working under supervision. The supervisor will have agreed to the programme as part of the process of enrolling for the paper. The topic will be agreed on in discussion between the student and the supervisor prior to the beginning of the paper.

This paper involves a programme of independent study, as agreed upon between the individual student and the supervisor. A detailed proposal will be developed, which includes a brief outline of the problem, a brief description of the proposed methodology, and an outline of any relevant ethical issues, as well as any other components required by the individual supervisor. This proposal should also include the structure of the proposed study, along with a timeline for the completion of each specific stage. The student should schedule regular meetings with their supervisor (weekly meetings are recommended), and ensure that drafts of work to be discussed are made available in a timely fashion prior to each meeting.

The assessment requirements will be defined as part of the proposal, and will be developed in conjunction with and approved by the supervisor. Assessment is measured on the work carried out on the project, as viewed through the assessment items, including any artefacts (implementations or other) produced as part of the project activity. Success is weighed against difficulty. As part of the assessment process, a demonstration may be requested of any application or artefact produced as part of the project. Similarly, for inspection of any relevant data or source code.
