Most organisations, large and small, now buy and customise software (such as ERP, CRM, and SCM systems) rather than build systems internally from scratch. Therefore, the importance of managing the selection, implementation, and commissioning of significant software projects is extremely high. Enterprise Systems in the Digital Business Era projects involving such software usually brings huge changes to business processes and organisational structure, and careful management of the change processes is critical to the success of what are usually very expensive and organisation critical projects.
This course deals with issues of managing such software projects with lectures, guest speakers, and field visits, a group project, and hands-on practicals on the latest SAP ERP system - S/4 Hana. The practicals do not require programming language skills. The course is mainly about ERP systems, which is an industrial standard worldwide, particularly for any mid-sized to large organisations. The SAP ERP system, which is the most widely adopted enterprise system, is used in the practicals to provide hands-on experience and to build experiences and familiarity with the user interface. The content is not about the enjoyment of software but to know what would be in the real complicated industrial situation and thus to prepare for entering the job markets.
DIGIB304 is offered in FLEXI mode this trimester. For students taking the paper in FLEXI mode please note that due to the nature of the computer software that is used, the level of support provided is not as comprehensive for students who are not able to attend physical (on campus) labs.
The lectures will be available online in FLEXI mode. Interactive class discussions will be conducted in the on campus labs, while practice can be done in the labs as well as by remote lab access. It is essential to have access to the lab in order to learn the content.
Materials are available via Moodle, which is the main communication platform for this course. Students are expected to use the material provided through the course only as a starting point and are expected to take on the responsibility to practice and learn from other related sources to develop both their self-understanding of the topic areas. Unless you have previous practical SAP ERP experience in the industry, the online lecture is essential for you to understand what you are doing in the lab and to prepare for the assessments. You are expected to take initiative and responsibility for your own self-learning.
The paper involves practical labs and the ongoing works from Week 2 are checked by the lab tutor as part of the assessment. Thus, students are expected to go through all class materials from Week 1 and we highly recommend enrolment in the paper before the commencement of the trimester to benefit the most from the expected learning processes.
The materials will be released before the online lecture and lab hours. A student can do the practice anytime in the lab or via remote lab access but practical questions are normally answered via the dedicated lab hours on-site. Lab issues usually require close help from the lab tutor, so it can be difficult to solve a particular problem via remote distance, such as an email. It is also encouraged that you can discuss and learn from your group mates to synthesise the learning experiences. Periodically, the lab tutor will check system records for each student's progress for assessments.
Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:
- Students will become familiar with the functions of ERP systems and their implementation modules (Lecture material will support this learning objective.)
- Students will become aware of the organizational issues that impede the effective implementation of packaged solutions
(Lecture material will support this learning objective)
- Students will be able to find and use resources about ERP systems management. (Group assignment)
- Students will get hands-on experience with the latest SAP S/4 HANA ERP system (Lab materials)
This course will provide the opportunity for you to learn about the environment for major enterprise software systems, and have some limited hands-on experience with the SAP system, but it is not intended to produce a person who can immediately get a job as an SAP expert, but possible jobs at the user level. Many companies are using this product, and further commercial training is often supported by the employer that can be used to build your skills to the point where you may be considered for a level position working with the SAP product as an advanced expert. It is hoped that if you see yourself in a future career involving work with the SAP system, that you will take the opportunity to undertake some self-directed study (during this course and in parallel with what is required for this course) to acquire and build your skills to the point where you may be able to find a future career in this area.Linked to the following assessments:
The assessments are listed on the table below.
Further details, such as marking schedules, assignment explanations, and related documents, will be provided through Moodle.
For the lab assessments, materials are uploaded with the weekly topics.
The internal assessment/exam ratio (as stated in the University Calendar) is 100:0. There is no final exam. The final exam makes up 0% of the overall mark.

Required and Recommended Readings*
There is not a specific textbook for this course. Lecture & lab materials are from SAP Inc. and the SAP Academic Alliance. The material will be available via Moodle before the lecture and the labs. It is suggested that you bring lecture hand-outs to the class and take notes. It is expected that you will bring the lab materials to the lab and work on the practical sessions. You may choose to use other devices to see those PDF files but then in the practical test, they are not allowed.
For copyright issues, a student should only keep a copy for the self-learning process in this class and extra copies should not be made for external distribution. Materials are from SAP with Global Bike Inc Data Set for S/4 HANA
The following books may be a helpful aid to enhance or extend your learning in this course and are recommended, but not required to be purchased. As the features of SAP change rapidly, look for the latest versions of reference books and the previous are for the understanding of existing markets (many companies are still using early versions of SAP) – the good ones do get updated and reprinted regularly.

Workload will vary as the course progresses through the early formative stages and on to the group work project. However, it is expected that you will spend a total of 150 hours on this course throughout the trimester, including class times.
Please note, that we are mainly able to answer practical questions during the lab sessions as it is very difficult to know what you have encountered via distance. So please come to the on-campus practical sessions or at least participate in real-time ZOOM lab sessions if you are able to. If you do not participate in the lab, the assumption is that you would resolve problems on your own or work together with classmates. Lab works status is kept by SAP systems immediately at every step.
