Paper Description
This 15-point paper focuses on understanding of coastal processes, sediments, and evolution of coastal landforms as a basis for coastal management.
Paper Structure
The outcomes will be achieved through formal lectures, field trips, and assignments where analytical and interpretative skills will be developed, and important concepts covered in lectures are reinforced.
The course programme is available on Moodle, and appears at the start of course notes. It may be necessary to alter the programme after the paper starts, in which case the version on Moodle will be the most current.
Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:
Assessment
The final examination is the only compulsory piece of assessment. However, the laboratory exercises, and project based on the field trip represent a major part of the final assessment, so absences should be explained.
Objectives will be achieved through formal lectures, laboratories in which students complete a series of exercises, and a field trip.
Assessment Components
The internal assessment/exam ratio (as stated in the University Calendar) is 60:40. The final exam makes up 40% of the overall mark.
Required and Recommended Readings
Recommended Readings
- P.D. Komar: Beach Processes and Sedimentation
- R.A Davis and D FitzGerald: Beaches and Coasts
- R.G. Dean and R.A. Dalrymple: Coastal Processes with Engineering Applications
- G. Masselink, M.G. Hughes and J. Knight: Coastal Processes & Geomorphology
- D. Jackson and A.D. Short: Sandy Beach Morphodynamics
Students are reminded that at 3rd year level lecture notes are only the starting point for attaining knowledge, and you are encouraged to demonstrate a wide supplementary reading knowledge from library research. Students are advised that web sites are not considered as “authoritative references” unless they are articles in peer reviewed journals.
Online Support
The paper is supported by learning resources accessed via Moodle. A copy of the previous years lecture notes is also available for purchase.
Online support will be provided via Moodle, which is accessible to all students who are enrolled in the paper.
Workload
The formal contact hours consist of 35 lectures, a one-hour progress test, a ten-hour field trip, 10 two-hour practical sessions, one tutorial, and a two-hour final test. The exercises, 5 quarter-hour online quizzes, and project should take ~80 hours of your own time to complete; the progress test will need 10 hours of revision time; and the final test should take 40 hours of revision time. A 300-level 15 point paper in any of the science subjects offered by the University of Waikato typically involves less than 80 hours of supervised study and it is assumed that at least 70 hours will be spent in private study by an ‘average’ student.
