This paper examines methodologies used to assess risk associated with a range of geohazards from high frequency/low magnitude to low frequency/high magnitude events. A specific focus is on dealing with extreme value prediction, and assessing risk with uncertain data.

The paper will be taught by a combination of presentations by staff, and student presentations based on reviewing of published case studies.

The specific hazards and associated risk investigated by the students will be negotiated by the students.

Workload

There are twelve 2-hour sessions that consist of lectures, presentations and discussions. A 500-level 15 point paper in any of the science subjects offered by the University of Waikato typically involves less than 30 hours of supervised study and it is assumed that up to 120 hours will be spent in private study by an ‘average’ student. Students should allocate the 120 hours approximately as 70% for course work and 30% for exam preparation.

The characteristics of geohazards (frequency, magnitude and impact) are taught in most papers within the Earth Sciences major and associated minors. This paper advances student skills onto the assessment of risk as required by the NZ legislative framework (eg. RMA 1991).
