Paper Description
This paper explores teaching and learning in a variety of contexts, lifelong and life-wide. However, the main focus is adult learning.
Learning and teaching are universal human activities that take place in a variety of settings. This paper aims to meet the needs of a broad range of participants with interest in learning and teaching principles and practices in both formal and informal settings.
In class and online, we will explore how learning theories inform our thinking and practice as educators in a variety of settings, including workplaces, and engage in challenging ourselves as learners to realise our own personal learning goals. You will be invited to research, contextualise and incorporate your own learning experiences and develop philosophies of education to last a lifetime.
Paper Structure
The paper will be taught using a blended and flipped approach, where students will work both online and face-to-face.
Each week, students will prepare for the scheduled class by viewing, reading or investigating the topic of study. Resources and guidance will be provided in Moodle for this purpose.
A single class session will be held on campus on Thursday morning. This face-to-face session will be a combined tutorial/workshop which emphasises interactive learning. These sessions will be facilitated by the course convenor and guests through the trimester.
Following the on-campus class, students are required to work in moderated discussion groups within Moodle (online) to extend consideration of the weekly focus. These discussion groups will be monitored by the course convenor.
Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:
Assessment

- Access to individualised help with assessments, via personal dialogue space
- One-to-one communication with the paper convenor, via personal dialogue space
- Weekly discussion forums for topics in the paper
- Dropboxes for submission of assignments, and return of feedback and results
Workload
This is a 15-point paper so you should be prepared to spend approximately 150 hours on the work required for this paper during the trimester. Much of this time will be spent becoming familiar with literature and theory related to teaching and learning in contexts. You should spend time preparing each week in advance of the on-campus session, and following up the session with active participation in Moodle, as well as on progressing your personal learning challenge.
In addition to allowing two hours per week for meeting face-to-face, students should expect to spend 3-5 hours online each week, preparing, reading and responding.
Remaining time should be spent researching, reading, meeting informally to discuss work with classmates, experimenting with ideas, and completing assessments.
