The multidisciplinary science of bioprocessing applies engineering principles to living organisms or their useful components to produce products and services of value to society. One of the most topical issues in bioprocess engineering at the moment is the large scale manufacture of the COVID vaccine. Successful exploitation of bioprocess engineering to achieve such a feat involves knowledge of microbiology and chemical engineering. This paper covers concepts of fermentation technology, principles of bioreactor operation, bioprocess variables and their measurement, and key product separation techniques.

Lectures/Tutorials

There will be weekly face to face tutorial/workshop sessions on Wednesdays from 11-12 AM in G3.33.

Laboratory/Project Work

Bioprocess engineering laboratory will be held in LSL1.16 and E.G.01. The date will be advised during the course.

Field trips

There will be a field trip to a bioprocessing facility. The date will be advised during the course.

International Students

For international students in New Zealand under student visas, regular attendance is part of your visa obligation and is checked as a requirement on the University under the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students, to which the University is a signatory. Academic staff are formally required to monitor attendance in classes and submission of compulsory assessment events/items and to report to Waikato International in the event that any problem with irregular attendance or non-submission is not resolved.
