Paper Description

Edit Paper Description Content

This course covers the basic principles of fluid mechanics. Topics include fluid statics, fluid dynamics, Bernoulli and energy equations, momentum analysis of flow structures, flow measurement, dimensional analysis, internal flow in pipes and ducts, external flow over streamlined and bluffed bodies, pump sizing and selection, and an introduction to open channel flow.

The learning outcomes for this paper are linked to Washington Accord graduate attributes WA1-WA11. Explanation of the graduate attributes can be found at: https://www.ieagreements.org/assets/Uploads/Documents/IEA-Graduate-Attributes-and-Professional-Competencies-2021.1-Sept-2021.pdf

The paper content is delivered through a combination of online mini-lectures, face-to-face lectures, face-to-face laboratories, face-to-face workshops, and face-to-face tutorials.

Please note that the Lectures, Water Network Design Challenge Workshops, and Tutorials start in the FIRST week of the trimester, whereas the laboratories start in the SECOND week of the trimester. All of these activities are an essential part of the learning for this paper.

Assessment

Samples of your work may be required as part of the Engineering New Zealand accreditation process for BE(Hons) degrees. Any samples taken will have the student name and ID redacted. If you do not want samples of your work collected then please email the engineering administrator, Natalie Shaw (natalie.shaw@waikato.ac.nz), to opt out.

The learning outcomes are assessed using a combination of:

Tutorial assignments (10%)

There will be five Tutorial assignments worth 2% each.

Laboratory Worksheets (15%)

There will be five laboratory worksheet worth 3% each.

Test (15%) - 2 hour

There will be a 2 hour face-to-face test in the LG.01 on Tuesday 13th September from 6 pm - 8 pm. The format will be discussed in class prior to the test. You may bring a 'cheat sheet' (1 x A4 sheet of paper with notes written on both sides).

Water Network Design Challenge (10%)

Groups of approximately 4 students will design and model water distribution networks to meet a given specification. Each group member is required to develop either a metered or unmetered network (5%), and each team is required to submit a group report (5%).

Exam (50%) - 3 hour

The final exam will cover the whole trimester's lecture material. It will be a closed book face-to-face exam. Programmable calculators, not containing stored information, are allowed. A formula sheet will be provided. The format of the Exam will be discussed in the tutorials during the last week of the course. Students must get a minimum of 40% in the exam to pass the paper.
