What this paper is about
Engineering Work Placement 2 covers the second work placement requirement for BE(Hons) students and is typically undertaken during the summer at the end of the third year of the BE(Hons) degree. Work placements provide students with the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills learnt at the university and develop professional skills through work in industry, agencies and research institutes, as students work alongside professional engineers and others.
Placements are typically secured with the assistance of dedicated Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) Coordinators. Students who intend to undertake a work placement are advised to contact the WIL team via hecs-wil@waikato.ac.nz after applying for the paper through MyWaikato.
The learning outcomes for this paper are linked to Washington Accord graduate attributes WA1-WA11. Explanation of the graduate attributes can be found at: https://www.ieagreements.org/
Note: this 0pt work placement fulfils 400 hours of the work experience requirement of the BE(Hons); however, it cannot count towards the Diploma in Engineering Management or Certificate in Professional Engineering Practice.
How this paper will be taught
This paper requires students to be in an engineering-relevant workplace for at least 400 hours, reporting to a workplace supervisor. During the placement, all interactions with the convenor and other university staff are normally through Moodle, email and/or Zoom.
This paper has an introductory session, at the beginning of B trimester, which will be communicated via Moodle. Activities and learning for this paper primarily take place at an engineering-relevant workplace.
Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:
Assessments
How you will be assessed
Due dates for the assessment items depend on the start and end dates of the work placement. Dates shown are for the standard summer work placement timing. Students who are undertaking placements during other times of the year should enrol and email the convenor before starting their placement.
The internal assessment/exam ratio (as stated in the University Calendar) is 100:0. There is no final exam.
