This course is to prepare students to become professional engineers, recognise they are part of a profession, and have the skills required to excel in the profession. Topics will include roles engineers play in the profession, professional engineering ethics and behaviour, an introductory understanding on certain legal topics related to engineers such as contract law and legal responsibility, Treaty of Waitangi and interacting with iwi groups, intellectual property, project management and negotiation skills. The topics will be supported with industrial case studies.

The paper is taught through a combination of lectures and workshops. In the semester A there will be two lectures per week with one 2-hour workshop per fortnight. In semester B there will be one lectures per week with one 2-hour workshop per fortnight. An additional lecture slot in semester B will be used for guest lectures will be held every fortnight. Workshops will be used to conduct assessment and project/problem based learning exercises building on material covered in the lectures and from a series of required readings that will be posted on moodle.

    Explain and demonstrate the important skills required to manage a project.

    Demonstrate a level of understanding of the importance of engineering ethics and professional behaviour. Be able to analyse and discuss ethics in the context of engineering problems and business contexts.

    Apply principles of the Treaty of Waitangi to NZ based engineering business decisions and tikanga Maori to consultation and interaction with iwi and iwi owned enterprises.

    Explain and demonstrate an understanding of legal obligations of professional engineers. Be able to write and interpret a simple contract and explain the main purpose and obligations under an example standardised contract. Demonstrate an understanding of the regulatory regime in New Zealand.
