This course is to prepare students to become professional engineers, recognise they are part of a profession, and have the skills required to excel in the profession. Topics will include roles engineers play in the profession, professional engineering ethics and behaviour, communication, an introductory understanding on certain legal topics related to engineers such as contract law and legal responsibility, intellectual property, Treaty of Waitangi and interacting with iwi groups, project management and negotiation skills. The topics will be supported by industrial case studies.

he paper is taught through a combination of lectures and workshops. During the A trimester there will be two lectures per week with one 1-hour workshop per fortnight. During the B trimester there will be two lectures per week for the first 6 weeks. Workshops will be used to enforce and discuss the material covered in the lectures and from a series of required readings that will be posted on moodle. There are six workshops in total.

Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:

  • Explain and demonstrate engineering management principles required to manage an engineering project (WA8, WA10).
    Linked to the following assessments:
  • Analyse and apply ethical principals, professional codes of conduct, and norms of engineering practices to engineering activities (WA6, WA7).

  • Apply principles of the Treaty of Waitangi to NZ based engineering business decisions and tikanga Maori to engagement and interaction with iwi and iwi owned enterprises. (WA6,WA9)

Students are required to achieve a minimum of 50% in the Ethics & Professional Behaviour assessment in order to pass the course. Those who fail to do so will receive an IC for the paper. Students who do not achieve 50% will be given an additional opportunity to achieve a pass for the ethics assessment.

Samples of your work may be required as part of the Engineering New Zealand accreditation process for BE(Hons) degrees. Any samples taken will have the student name and ID redacted. If you do not want samples of your work collected then please email the engineering administrator, Natalie Shaw (natalie.shaw@waikato.ac.nz), to opt out.

Due dates for Project Management Plans and Reports depend on which groups students are assigned to. The PM Plan is due in mid April for A trimester groups and late August for B trimester groups. The PM Report is due in early July for A trimester groups and late October for B trimester groups. Specific due dates will be provided in the guidance about the Project Management exercise.

The Negotiation assessment will be conducted in-person and will take place during the last two weeks of A trimester.
