The “D” (full year) occurrence is for students who are enrolled in this 30-pt paper.

The ENGEN581 paper builds on the knowledge and skills students have gained in the first three years of their professional engineering degree and reinforces the multidisciplinary aspects of engineering. Students will learn how to carry out an individual research project and also gain an appreciation of the depth and breadth of knowledge and skills required for completing a research project to address the real-world problems. The paper is normally taken by CaBE, MaPE, Environmental and Civil students.

Engineering New Zealand competencies

ENGEN581 is a “capstone” paper in the engineering degree and makes up a quarter of the final year of the BE(Hons) degree. It is a significant undertaking requiring commitment from each student to progress to completion. Project and individual planning and time management is needed to ensure that deadlines are met just like the real world. As well as the academic learning outcomes, the graduate develops key competencies outlined in the Engineering New Zealand requirements for initial academic education for professional engineers including:

  • Engineering synthesis and creativity by completing open-end research projects
  • Verbal and written communication skills by giving presentations and preparing reports that contribute to the overall grade. These reports must contain evidence of careful planning, good engineering judgment, and the ability to manage resources to minimise financial and other risks
  • Research and analysis by developing and completing the specific research projects
  • Understanding the basic principles underlying human, physical and financial resources via project management and to complete projects on time and to budget.

Students select their research project (individual) from the list offered each year. The School of Engineering reserves the right to restrict the projects available, depending on resources, number or students and backgrounds of the students.

Seminars and workshops: The paper has seminars covering aspects of project management, research philosophy, and skills required to carry out research projects successfully. The schedule for seminars will be advised during the course. Students enrolled in the paper MUST attend ALL seminars throughout the year, irrespective of the occurrence they are enrolled in.

Important Note for International Students: For international students in New Zealand under student visas, regular attendance is part of your visa obligation and is checked as a requirement on the University under the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students, to which the University is a signatory. Academic staff are formally required to monitor attendance in classes and submission of compulsory assessment events/items and to report to Waikato International in the event that any problem with irregular attendance or non-submission is not resolved.

This paper will use moodle for communications. Information presented in the seminars, visiting speakers’ notes (if available) and other resources to help with the project and report writing will be put on Moodle. Assignments and reports are submitted electronically through moodle.

Moodle will be used for class notices. Instructions provided on Moodle and in lectures are considered as given to the class as a whole. It is the student’s responsibility to familiarise themselves with the information in this course outline and to check the Moodle site regularly.

Students are expected to work around 170-190 hours independently on their research project and present the outcome of their work in Engineering Design show, a three-day event in October.

A brief description of each component in ENGEN581 will be given during the course and put on Moodle.

This paper is for students enrolled in the BE(Hons). Specific requirements on projects depend on the engineering programme. Students must normally have completed Years 1, 2 and 3 of their chosen BE(Hons) programme before enrolling in this paper.
