Using Project Based Learning, this paper will furnish the student with an understanding of the innovation and product development process. It will explain the different levels of innovation, innovation techniques, how to screen ideas, the types of Intellectual Property and how to write a basic Business Plan. For the product development part, Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), architecture design (using Unified Modeling Language UML) and User Interface (UI) prototyping will be introduced and applied to the project. Each group will present their product idea, prototype and business model at an investor 'pitch'. Teaching is through keynote lectures and case studies in conjunction with Project Based Learning (PBL) workshops.

This paper is taught through one keynote lecture, one case study lecture and one PBL workshop session per week. Students work in groups of c. 4 to complete a holistic Project Based Learning (PBL) assignment. The assignment enables students to apply ENGME585 material and that from other engineering papers to 'realistic' product development.

International Students
For international students in New Zealand under student visas, regular attendance is part of your visa obligation and is checked as a requirement on the University under the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students, to which the University is a signatory. Academic staff are formally required to monitor attendance in classes and submission of compulsory assessment events/items and to report to Waikato International in the event that any problem with irregular attendance or non-submission is not resolved.

The assessment of this paper will consider the following aspects:

Product Innovation and screening, Intellectual Property, and business plan. Product development; customer requirements, software architecture modelling, user interface design and rapid prototyping. The work produced in the assignments will be assessed through meetings with the client, prototype demonstrations, technical report and an 'investor pitch'.
