This paper is an essential component of the Master of Engineering Practice degree and ensures students are prepared for the advanced Materials Processing papers that follow in the next semester of the programme. The paper has an emphasis on self-directed learning, which is an important component of graduate-level study.

The paper consists of 12 topics, one for each of the 12 weeks of the semester. The course will be based mainly around reading/video material and weekly assignments, with assistance from tutors during tutorials, and the option to audit undergraduate lectures if required. There will also be three labs to attend.
