This paper aims to present students with ideas, guidelines, and frameworks that can be used to write more effectively in an academic context. The aims combine to help students for whom English is an Additional Language with practice in an academic context with the skills of reading, writing, and lexical development.

Paper Structure

This paper is fully online and twice a week, students will be expected to participate with the lecture materials, online exercises and discussion areas as these will be the methods used to deliver content and allow for student practice and participation. Lecture delivery days and online tutorial times will be advised in Moodle at the beginning of the paper.

When the lecture materials are delivered, students will be expected to watch and read the materials and complete exercises set. The time this is expected to take is three (3) hours. In the online tutorials, students will be expected to complete online exercises and contribute to discussions. The time this is expected to take is two hours.

The paper is supported on-line via its Moodle page, and Panopto recordings of lectures will be one of the methods used to deliver lecture content. Zoom (or its equivalent) will also be used for tutorial discussions.

Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:

  • be competent with:

    1. locating and assessing academic research material on and offline in relation to cross-disciplinary topics,

    2. reading such research material, recognizing main points, and extracting relevant information to create useful notes,

    3. recognizing a writer's attitude and interpreting a writer's intention,

    4. recognizing personal writing attitudes and interpreting personal writing intentions,

    5. understanding the research process, selecting appropriate approaches and methods to collate and use such information for writing,

    6. having a cultural understanding of academic integrity in relation to using and displaying research material in writing,

    7. using a genre approach for preparing portfolios of writing and research material, allowing for drafting, re-drafting and editing of assignments/reports/case studies, analyzing language relating to written discourse and personal assessment of writing.

Assessments include online exercises, reading exercises and individual pieces of written work completed throughout the course. Full and complete details of all assessments will be available via Moodle throughout the trimester.

All enrolled students are automatically assignment an email username and password that can be arranged on enrollment and subsequently via http://tools.its.waikato.ac.nz/newuser.html. This registration process will make available a free gmail service provided by the University.

Attendance:

The lectures for this paper will be delivered online for all students and accessing Moodle and working through lecture materials, exercises, readings and interactive discussions is necessary for completing the paper. Moodle logs for the paper will be frequently checked to ensure that all students are engaging with materials and activities provided.

Attendance is compulsory for the online tutorials for the paper. Regardless of the fulfillment of the assessment requirements, if any student fails to attend the number of tutorials required (80%), they will be awarded a fail for the paper, unless medical certificates are provided.

Important note for International Students:

For international students in New Zealand with student visas, regular attendance at lectures and tutorials is part of the visa obligation and is checked as a requirement of the University under the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students, to which the University is a signatory. Academic staff are formally required to monitor attendance in classes and submission of compulsory assessment event/items and to report to Waikato International in the event that any problem with irregular attendance or non-submission is not resolved.

Workload:

The workload for the paper will be easier to manage if students access Moodle and review lecture material, complete set activities and readings and allow plenty of lead-in time for assessments. Students should also make sure that advantage is taken of online tutorial help during the trimester. As well as the four indicated online hours of lectures per week and the one tutorial hour, students are expected to spend upwards of 4 hours per week of their own time, preparing for and completing online activities, discussions and assignments, and reviewing materials.
