New Zealand business managers must develop human resource (HR) skills for two basic reasons. First, they need to understand how to apply various HR practices, and in what combinations or strategies, to influence employee behaviour and human capital, with the bigger aim of carrying out the organisation's strategy and achieving higher levels of performance. Second, they need to know how to carry out various HR functions (e.g., health and safety) so as to maintain organisational compliance with the law.
