Paper Description

Edit Paper Description Content
In this paper, you will develop self-awareness and refine your interpersonal and intercultural communication skills. You will familiarise yourself with both the theory and practice of professional communication in your everyday life contexts, specifically in organisational, business, and workplace settings. You will get an opportunity to practise your speaking and listening skills by participating and leading class discussions, collaborating with your peers, negotiating, and preparing a presentation on a topic. Apart from communicating effectively in person, the quality and strength of your written communication plays a crucial role. In this paper, you will learn how to evaluate and improve your own business writing.

FLEXI format

This paper is offered in a FLEXI format. Although all sessions are recorded, it is expected that students attend and participate in each session to get maximum benefit from the learning activities. Attendance and participation (especially in breakout rooms) is noted during each session. Students who cannot attend sessions for legitimate reasons, must please notify the paper convenor (Dr Nadia Trent) ahead of time.

This paper leverages an active learning philosophy. This means that a lot of your learning depends on your engagement with the materials, your lecturer, and your peers. You will prepare for sessions by reading/watching/absorbing prescribed articles, case studies, videos, TED talks, and other resources, and thinking about the issues raised in them. Each three-hour session will be a blend of lecturing, workshop activities, discussions, and more. It is expected that every student will prepare for every session ahead of time and engage productively in activities and discussions in the session. Engagement doesn’t mean that you have to be loud or take the spotlight, but it does mean that you have to pay attention and participate in your own way.

COVID considerations

The current COVID situation is uncertain and likely to change many times throughout the A Trimester. Regardless of the changes, we remain committed to the safety of our staff and students and the continuity of high-quality learning.

The Moodle page has a section that contains up to date details of how COVID is affecting this paper's delivery. This section will be updated immediately if there are any changes to the paper as a result of COVID regulation changes or if one of the teachers needs to self-isolate or falls ill. Whenever a change is made to this section in Moodle, an announcement will also be sent to the class. Please check Moodle regularly and keep up to date with announcements.
