This paper is designed to identify and develop participants' leadership potential; to facilitate the process of ongoing personal and leadership development and to lead organisations effectively particularly through change. It guides leaders, and aspiring leaders, through research and experiential practices, on the role of leaders and influence in today's changing and complex environments.
Leadership is not a sole activity, so additionally we focus on the way leaders and followers interact, notions of team and shared leadership, and explore assumptions, beliefs, and values embedded and shaped in these practices.
The purpose of the paper is to:
- Recognize and apply effective leadership strengths, attributes and skills, and develop a personalized leadership development plan.
- Understand, apply and critique changes in organisations and the role of leadership.
- Understand, apply and reflect on research and current perspectives aimed at enhancing leadership in organisations.
- Analyse, critique and apply shared leadership concepts and constraints.
Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:
Identify ways of recognising, establishing and maintaining effective leadership
Students will use the reflective cycle to recognize and develop relevant leadership attitudes, skills and abilities.Linked to the following assessments:
Apply and analyse principles of effective leadership at the indiviudal and organisational level
Students will undertake research on a Leader, and develop a leadership case study for class presentation.Linked to the following assessments:
Leadership influence and change
Analyse critique and develop leadership skills in the context of tension in, and with, change.
Students will engage in both experiential and academic activities and produce credible results from their influence. Additionally students will be required to engage in courageous conversations around leadership.Linked to the following assessments:
Research, apply and examine leadership and change
Students will be required to understand the importance of change, and difficulties of this for leaders and employees. Students, both experientially and academically, will examine change frameworks and critique these.Linked to the following assessments:

In addition to your text, there are many other books that might help you with various aspects of this course. Reading more widely than the set text will be necessary in order to gain a good grade in the assessments, particularly the journal and assignment.
Keep current with local business news, read the business pages of the newspaper, look at local business publications as well as the business periodicals. You are advised to read the daily newspaper and watch out in other media for relevant current issues. Leadership is topical!
