Paper Description

Edit Paper Description Content

This paper has two components:

1. You will undertake an internship for 100 hours of work in an organisation to complete a project for an organisation and provide a report and/or a presentation to the organisation on the work you have completed.

2. A full research report with literature review and research methods (4,000-6,000). This research will be supervised by an academic supervisor and is the main requirement of this paper.

Paper Structure

Edit Paper Structure Content

In this paper you will complete a consultancy applied project for an organisation in an internship during which you work alone or with one other student at the site of a local employer for 4-5 weeks; or an internship overseas (personally managed and sourced by the student and at their own expense for travel and accommodation) which is approved by the MBM Director.

Internship

In early July 2019, you will be offered an opportunity to spend time in the workplace of a local NZ employer (possibly also overseas, at your own expense for travel and accommodation) to contribute your abilities to solve problems, work on management challenges and support the employer’s mission. During this 4-5 week period, you are “at work” and present at the employer’s workplace as needed by the employer – sometimes full-time, sometimes part-time and, in some cases, working on your project from home. The employer may be located in Hamilton or the surrounding region of Tauranga, Auckland or other NZ cities. We will discuss with you whether you have the ability to travel and be “at work” outside of Hamilton. There is no payment for this internship, but you may receive a letter of reference for your contribution which you may use for future employment searches (subject to the satisfactory completion of the required project).

Once you have been assigned to an internship, you are responsible for contacting the employer and setting up the initial meeting. You will then be responsible for performing the work given to you by the employer and to document your experience by providing a one-page interim report of what you have done; what you are going to do and issues that you are facing. This is to be submitted to Moodle 16 August.

The Convenor has the right to remove you from an internship for any reason, especially if there is a lack of performance or incompatibility with the employer.

Research Report

You will be assigned a supervisor for your ARCP. You will complete a significant business research paper based on the work you do in your internship. If the topic of the internship is not broad enough, your supervisor will help you develop the appropriate content for an appropriate research report. As part of the research aspect of your internship and consultancy, you will need to complete an ethics application.

Please refer to the assessments outlined below for managing your time.
