What this paper is about
Nau mai, haere mai ki te HSHUP301-23A.
Welcome! This paper is an opportunity for our Bachelor of Health (BHELTH301 & 302) and Bachelor of Health, Sport and Human Performance (BHSHUP301 & 302) students to experience and contribute to an organisation whose work is focused on an aspect of health that best aligns with your major, and where you think you might like to work after you have graduated.
This is not work experience in the same sense as when you were at school; the expectation is that you will contribute to the goals of the organisation and will be supported in your professional and personal development.
To participate in this paper, you need to have completed the police vetting process and secured a placement before the first workshop - which is why this paper has an early closing date for enrolments.
If you have any questions about placements, please email Dr. Shannon O'Donnell, the Placement Coordinator (shannon.odonnell@waikato.ac.nz).
How this paper will be taught
This paper comprises 8 x 2 hour workshops, and students are to complete a minimum of 60 hours on placement before the end Week 14.
As outlined below, these workshops run for the first 8 weeks of the trimester.
These workshops are designed to prepare you for your placement and professional career - workshop attendance should therefore be the priority when negotiating and scheduling your placement hours.
Required Readings
Prior to the first workshop, read the 'Health and Safety at Work - quick reference guide' published by Worksafe (https://worksafe.govt.nz/managing-health-and-safety/getting-started/introduction-hswa-special-guide/). Also check the Moodle page for other readings that may need to be completed in preparation for in-class discussions and group work.
Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:
Assessments
How you will be assessed
This paper is 100% internally assessed. It is therefore particularly important that you submit all the assessment items.
To maximise your success, you need to be engaged in the paper, and complete your placement with professionalism.
Please note that this 15 point paper is like any other fulltime university course, in that you are expected to engage in all aspects of the course in order to maximise your success.
** Refer to Moodle for full assessment instructions and guidelines **
The internal assessment/exam ratio (as stated in the University Calendar) is 100:0. There is no final exam.
