This paper supports students to gain an in-depth understanding of ageing in a changing world, taking account of a range of cultural, personal and societal factors. Students gain critical skills and understanding to undertake research in the future with and for this population. A focus on governmental and business policy and practice assists students to explore implications of different approaches to ageing populations and workforces that will be of benefit in a range of careers.

This paper will assist students to understand the complex implications of ageing in a changing world and builds further on 100 and 200 level HMDEV papers. For those students who want a focus on adult development and aging, this paper extends on HMDEV202's consideration of adult development and ageing to provide a more in depth examination of ageing in a changing world (though HMDEV202 is not a prerequisite). The paper is designed to provide understandings and skills for research in this field and for planning and critiquing policy and practice.

This paper is taught over a 12-week semester and is divided into 12 topics focusing on ageing in a changing world, taught with ngā mahi (lecture and tutorial content) and ko ngā pānui matua (recommended or additional readings). Weekly readings provide a base of content that will be further explored in lectures and tutorials and some supplementary learning activities in Moodle. These will also inform classroom discussions and assignment work. Students are expected to:

  • Attend all lectures (1 hour)
  • Attend all tutorials (2 hours)
  • Read in advance the relevant readings as indicated in the paper outline
  • Complete and submit all assessment tasks by their due date.

General requirements and regulations

Assessment Components
The requirements for each of the assessments are described in detail later in this Paper Outline.

Alignment of assessment and learning outcomes
Students will be working towards all of the above Learning Outcomes throughout this paper. All the outcomes will be assessed in an ongoing and holistic way throughout each of the assignments. Specifically, Assignment 1 will contribute to the assessment of 1), 2); Assignment 2 to the assessment of 1), 2), 5) and Assignment 3 to the assessment of 1), 3), 4).

Passing the paper
To obtain a pass in this paper students must obtain a final mark of 50% or more for the whole paper. If you do not obtain a passing grade for a particular assessment item, you will still pass the course if your overall mark reaches 50% (C-).You are strongly advised to attempt all tasks, as this will increase the likelihood that you pass the course overall. Resubmission of an unsatisfactory piece of work is available for Written Assignment 1 only. Resubmitted assignments may be accepted after consultation with the paper convenor, and these can receive a maximum grade of C-. Please note that there are no re-submission opportunities for Assignment 2 or Assignment 3.

The reading list also provides background reading for assignments and, from time to time, some links to reading materials may be posted in Moode.

There is considerable choice within assignment topics and students are expected to carry out library searches for appropriate materials. Guidance will be given from your Lecturer and Library Coach. Guest lecturers may also indicate other recommended reading in relation to their topics. Students will be advised of these readings in Moodle during the sessions concerned.

If you have not done these papers for any reason, or cannot remember the material, you would be well advised to refer to one or both of the above books as required.

This is a Level 3 paper worth 15 points towards your degree and University regulations stipulate an expected total workload of 150 hours. As for all 300 level papers, there is a total contact hour expectation of between 36-60 hours. Students should engage with weekly lecture notes and weekly tutorial activities and keep up the online engagement and 'out of class' work (e.g. organisation of lecture notes, additional reading, preparation of assignments, etc). Keep these expectations in mind, and organise your study time effectively.
