What this paper is about

Edit What this paper is about Content

This paper is an introduction to the activity of counselling, including the learning of some basic helping skills and an examination of the basis for these in theory and practice. It includes an examination of the philosophical, psychological and sociological principles that underpin the aims and methods of the helping professions in general, and counselling in particular.

Students will be expected to be able to

1. Explain the underlying principles of a range of different approaches to counselling, using the following questions as a framework:
What does it look like in practice?
What are the underlying ideas that produce this counselling method?
How is language used in this method of counselling?
What kind of relationship between the counsellor and client does this approach promote?
How does this counselling method conceive of gender relations?
How does this counselling method handle cultural differences?
How does this approach to counselling work with a particular problem issue?

2. Carry out a helping conversation using a range of listening skills

3. Reflectively analyse their own performance in the helping conversation.

How this paper will be taught

Edit How this paper will be taught Content

Each week there is a two-hour lecture and one-hour tutorial for this paper. Please see below for details.

When examining a particular counselling approach, the two-hour lecture is structured in two parts:
1. The first hour explores the history and theory of particular approaches;
2. the second hour then focuses more on the practice of the approach, viewing how the theory is applied.

The tutorial focuses on different material, with practical learning of helping skills to prepare for the interview and transcript assignment.
