The content of this paper centres on adult development with a particular emphasis on ageing, diversity, culture, and social justice. Examining social and political discourses, the paper explores how the resulting messages influence the everyday experiences of people at different stages of adulthood; and the implications for working with diversity in adulthood.

A key objective of this paper is to deepen understanding of skills to critique policy planning and practice, and to develop research skills in the adult development field in New Zealand and internationally. Students are encouraged to consider concepts about adulthood and ageing from a scholarly yet critical perspectives, and to deeply consider the implications of these theories for their own personal development and for social policy affecting people throughout adulthood.

This paper is taught over a 12 week semester. Content is delivered via combined weekly lecture/tutorial sessions in most weeks, and guided independent online activities in some weeks. Taught sessions will primarily be delivered by Sonja Ellis (sonja.ellis@waikato.ac.nz); but on occasions invited speakers may teach specific sessions. While the face-to-face sessions will typically include some lecture content, they will mainly be workshop based. It is therefore expected that students will complete set readings and activities, as specified on Moodle, and come prepared to engage in discussions and activities in the taught sessions.

This is a 500 level paper (30 points). The minimum workload expected for a paper at this level is 300 hours.
