The primary aim of this paper is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to critically examine and effectively apply evidence based physiological principles to the prescription of exercise to improve performance, fitness, health and wellbeing. Students will critically examine how different frequencies, intensities, types and durations of exercise cause differing physiological adaptations, and how these adaptations can modify fitness, performance and health. Within this paper students will also investigate how to arrange exercise to enhance; force production, power output, work capability, functional capacity, physiological efficiency, and health. Furthermore, students will be introduced to issues surrounding best practice, safety, health, wellbeing, fitness, innovations, technology and research associated with prescribing exercise interventions for elite athletes, amateur sports people and the fitness industry.

Lectures 10am-11:50am Mondays in MSB.1.05

Laboratories either Monday 4-6pm or Wednesday 8-10am or Wednesday 2-4pm in various venues (see details below)

Lectures.This course consists of twelve, two-hour face-to-face lecture, held from 10:00am-12:00pm each Monday of the A semester in MSB.1.05

Laboratories. There are twelve compulsory laboratories, students can choose to attend either Monday 4-6pm, Wednesday 8-10am or Wednesday 2-4pm. Due to class size and limited capacity of the facilities used for the laboratory classes, students are expected to only attend the laboratory class they sign up for.

Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:

  • Critically understand the key physiological systems in the human body as they relate to physical activity and exercise.

Assignment one
30 marks out of a total 100 marks for the paper
Title. Pre-screening and resistance training.
Report due 11:30pm on Sunday 18th April

The report consists of the four components described below which relate to data collected and/or analysis completed in laboratories 1 - 7. The maximum marks available for each component are included in brackets

1. Pre-exercise screening (8/30)
2. Body composition and fitness assessment (7/30)
3. Competency assessment for key resistance training lifts (6/30)
4. Resistance training program (9/30)

Assignment two.
30 marks out of a total 100 marks for the paper
Title. Prescribing and monitoring endurance conditioning
Report due 11:30pm on Friday 4th June

The report consists of the three components described below which relate to data collected and/or analysis completed in laboratories 8 - 12. The maximum marks available for each component are included in brackets

1.Determining Anaerobic threshold and VO2max (10/30)
2.Analysing monitored endurance training session data (10/30)
3.Endurance training program (10/30)

Final Test.

40 marks out of a total 100 marks for the paper.

The final test will consist of a series of long answer questions that will explore the applied physiological adaptations associated with changes in various types of physical conditioning and health. Further questions will explore critical knowledge of the various principles of exercise and conditioning monitoring processes.

The internal assessment/exam ratio (as stated in the University Calendar) is 60:40. There is no final exam. The final exam makes up 40% of the overall mark.
