This paper will be taught wholly online, but is listed as a (HAM) offering, as some students may need to access visual resources from the University Library or ITS. Materials, in the form of PPTs, text documents, etc., will be uploaded on to Moodle every Thursday throughout the trimester. All assignments will be submitted via Moodle.

Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:

  • Students who successfully complete this paper should be able to:-

    --demonstrate a critical understanding of some of the aesthetic, historical, and philosophical dimensions that have shaped East Asian visual culture;

    --gain a greater understanding of the richness of East Asian visual cultures, and of the key ways they diverge and align with their western counterparts;

    --analyse key cultural signifiers embedded in East Asian films and artworks;

    --engage in discussions on specific films and paintings, sharing observations and ideas, and commenting critically on the analyses of others;

    --undertake self-directed research on a particular film or group of artworks.

This is a 15-point paper, equating to 150 learning hours.
