Paper Description

Edit Paper Description Content

This paper focuses on leadership and transformation.

Leaders today face volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) times. Navigating this environment requires leaders to draw on multiple perspectives, that facilitate growth and their ability to influence and transform. This course draws on psychological and business perspectives of leadership, and the outcome of differing strategies, by evaluating their effectiveness at the individual leadership level as well as implications for teams, and organizations.

The paper covers a range of leadership issues including leadership mindsets, strategies for motivating growth, influencing others, as well as contemporary issues. We build on leadership theory but integrate these with your own personal learning experiences, ultimately culminating in your own leadership transformation.

Edit Paper Structure Content

This paper is an interactive paper involving sessions that include lectures, readings, discussions, seminars, and reflective exercises. As a Masters level paper, the expectation is that students will run some sessions (flipped learning) and actively contribute to discussion and debates. At a minimum, students are expected to do the readings for the week before coming to class to optimize the quality of learning and the discussions. The readings can be accessed via the Waikato Reading List - in Moodle:

Note: This paper is also a Flexi paper, and as such students can join via ZOOM for the sessions. A ZOOM link to each session will be provided on Moodle.

Assessment

Edit Assessments Content

Much of the class content is 'flipped' learning. As such, and at this level, you will be actively engaged in preparing and teaching the class, with me.

In the first week, and via Moodle, you will sign up for topics that you will lead, and this is also addressed in assessment two outlined below. A similar process will be used for Assessment three (see Assessment details below).

Due to the Volatile, Uncertain, Changing and Ambiguous (VUCA) environment, we all now face, and you will lead others in, we will also discuss your own contingency plans for assessments and teaching of content.

As such, and as outlined further below, we call on Industry leaders as guest speakers to share their insights into leading others (and themselves) through VUCA times.

The class, the content, and the assessment are all designed to challenge you at a personal leadership level, and ready you for the changing VUCA world, you will navigate after graduation. I am looking forward to working with you!
