In this paper we examine children's literature from picturebook to novel; from author to illustrator; from history to modern times. We acknowledge the origin of children's literature as an oral form and a link between children's literature and education is a thread running through the course. Class members will develop a familiarity with a range of genres and a number of overarching themes, including didacticism, censorship, multiculturalism, and anthropomorphism.

  • Identify and explain the components of the main genres found in children’s literature.

  • Identify and discuss key issues (such as such as anthropomorphism, censorship, postmodernism, didacticism, multiculturalism and intertextuality) in children’s literature across genres.

This paper is internally assessed in three compulsory assignments. All written assignments must be submitted through Moodle and will be processed through ‘Turnitin’ which checks each assignment for plagiarism.

To pass this paper you must submit all internally assessed work by specified dates, and gain a passing grade in total.

This paper is delivered fully online. Lectures are delivered each week using Panopto and online discussions are held in relation to the lecture and weekly readings. The lecturer will respond to online discussions, make weekly announcements, and answer online queries in a timely manner.

For this paper you are expected to complete a minimum of 150 hours work.

Successful completion of this paper is based on the following:

Attendance and Participation

Students are expected to contribute regularly to all online discussions, and tasks. If students know in advance that they will be absent from a discussion or if they unavoidably miss a class or session, the lecturer should be advised.
