Ka whai haere tēnei o ngā pepa i te MAORI111. He akoranga tēnei hei whakapakari anō i te taha whakarongo me te taha kōrero ka tahi; ko te taha pānui me te tuhituhi ka rua. Ka tirohia ngā kupu me ngā whakatakotoranga mō ngā kaupapa pēnei i te kai, te kākahu, te tinana me ngā mahi a te rēhia. Ka mātaihia anō hoki ētehi o ngā tikanga o te marae. Heoi anō, ko te whāinga matua o tēnei o ā tātou akoranga, he whakapau i ō tātou kaha ki te whai i tō tātou reo, kia kaha tata atu ai tātou ki te pae tawhiti e whāia nei e tātou katoa. Kia kaha, kia māia, kia manawanui.

This course continues on from MAORI111 and will develop and extend listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The paper will be taught for 12 weeks, with a two week teaching recess. Students will be introduced to new grammatical structures and vocabulary relating to things such as food, clothing, leisure activities. Students will also learn about some aspects of the Māori culture through basic marae protocol and its portrayal in te reo Māori.

The paper is taught through a mixture of lectures, tutorials and is supplemented by online platforms such as Moodle and Panopto.

The delivery of the paper favours a bilingual approach, with a substantial amount of teaching through the medium of te reo Māori. The teaching strategies employed are based on Māori pedagogical practices and communicative language teaching methodology.

Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:

  • Whakamahi i ētahi o ngā momo tohutohu, whakahau hoki i roto i te reo Māori. Use a variety of instructions and commands in Māori.
    Linked to the following assessments:
  • Waihanga kete kōrero waingōhia e pā ana ki ngā momo kaupapa pēnei i ngā mahi a te rēhia, te kai me te kākahu. Construct basic oral and written texts about a variety of topics, such as food, clothing and leisure activities.
    Linked to the following assessments:
  • Whakamahi i ētahi o ngā momo kīanga hei tono, hei pātai, hei whakaae, hei whakahē rānei. Use a variety of phrases to request, offer, accept and decline.

Students are encouraged to study every night for at least two hours. Do not be mistaken that the hours during class time will be sufficient learning time, use this time to:

- Read and revise any material brought up in tutorial classes.

- Practise all new sentence constructions learnt during class time.
