Under supervision from an appropriate member of the programme, students will devise and produce a directed study that investigates an avenue of contemporary Screen and Media topics. The final outcome will be discussed with the supervisor, but it may take the form of several short essays, or an exegesis and creative practice artefact.

This is a supervised paper where a member of academic staff will arrange meetings, typically, every two weeks. Students must note that it is their responsibility to produce the materials in their own time and that there are NO lectures or workshops. At this stage, students will have the necessary skills to work independently.

Assessments will be the supervisor's decision based on the topic the student has chosen. If students pursue a traditional research framework, the outcome could be three high-quality essays (2,000 words each). Creative practice research frameworks are also encouraged with two high quality essays with an additional output in the form of short film, audio-visual installation, photography exhibit etc.
