This paper provides students with the skills and knowledge to become competent and confident in culturally diverse contexts, locally and globally, and to understand how people behave in culturally diverse organisational contexts.

The paper focuses on behaviour at the individual, group, inter­group and organisation level with particular emphasis on the management of behavioural outcomes, and applies it in a culturally diverse context.

This paper examines basic concepts of intercultural competency where consideration is given to individual and cross cultural values and practice in the organisational context. Through lectures, participative activities, tutorials and assessments, students develop an understanding of concepts such as cultural understanding and awareness, perceptions and personality, teams, diversity, and leadership. This will enable students to become competent in communicating and collaborating effectively in culturally diverse contexts, developing them to become effective leaders in local and global organisations.

An overall aim of this paper is to provide students with a basic understanding of important intercultural perspectives which they can apply in their management career.

This paper consists of lectures, tutorials,and reflective questions with a range of online materials available to support student learning. Lectures and tutorials will involve class discussions where active participation is expected. Assessments involve a mix of individual and group work, with a strong emphasis on case analysis.

Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:

  • MNGMT202 Intercultural Perspectives

    1. demonstrate a basic cultural understanding of tikanga, mātauranga Māori, interconnectedness of iwi, hapū and whānau

    2. explain core concepts related to perceptions, leadership, groups and teams, and organisation culture; and explain the relevance and interrelationship of those core concepts at individual, group and organisation levels and be able to understand and appreciate sources of diversity

    3. critically analyse cases/scenarios to demonstrate awareness of core concepts, and international perspectives and contexts

    4. demonstrate skills in working effectively and collaboratively in cross-cultural teams and communicating and collaborating in diverse contexts

    5. communicate their learning effectively through oral presentations and through written reports.

Assessments Overview: there are five parts to the assessment for MNMGT202:

  1. Individual Reflections – 32% (Individual)

    There are 4 sets of reflective questions, with students earning 8% for each reflection. The reflections cover the class material and discussions. The Moodle link closes on the Sunday of the week at 23:55 pm.

  2. Tutorials – case studies based on topics – 24% (Individual)
    There will be active case study discussions in tutorials. You will have 8 case study sessions, with each session earning 3%. You will analyse the case before the tutorial, and submit your analysis on Sunday of the week of the tutorial on or before 23:55 pm. You also need to demonstrate active participation. See the Tutorials description for details and instructions.
  3. Learning moment #1 and #2 – 15% (Group)

    Group members (individually) must each maintain a journal where they capture their learning moments. As a group, you need to collate all these individual key learning moments and present them as themes in your Learning moments #1 and #2 group reports. Learning moment #1 is due on the 26th April 2020 on or before 23:55 pm, and Learning moment #2 is due on the 31st May 2020 on or before 23:55 pm. Each Learning moment report will earn you 7.5%.

  4. Group project presentation - A charity project – 25% (Group)
    Groups will have to donate their time to a charity, and work as a team to accomplish a set task (e.g., preparing and serving meal to the homeless). They will then present their group work on the week of the 1st June 2020 in their tutorials.
  5. Synopsis of guest presentation – 4% (Individual)
    Students have to individually write a 150 word synopsis of their key learning with a photo that shows evidence of their presence in the guest presentation. This is worth 4%. This has to be uploaded to Moodle by Sunday 31st May 2020 before 11.30pm.
