This paper is directed towards enabling teachers to carry out small-scale inquiries either into their own mathematics teaching practice or into aspects of mathematical pedagogy. This will be achieved through discussion of possible approaches and particular issues in mathematics education during online discussions and in exploring various strategies for the student’s area of interest. In particular the paper will focus on critical reflection made of this practice. Throughout the paper mathematics education will be developed as a highly inclusive activity. Issues relating to public understandings of mathematics will be explored so students develop the capacity to be critical participants in curriculum issues. The particular approach to be taken here will focus on the students developing a reflective attitude to their teaching of mathematics, and this will be built through a research-led engagement with everyday teaching issues. A core feature of this reflective attitude will be a specific attention to how mathematics is understood and further developed in the context of their professional life and in the lives of the students they teach.

  • Cultural aspects of mathematics learning
  • Affective responses to mathematics
  • Approaches to mathematics teaching, including assessment and National Standards
  • Statistical literacy.
