Introduction and development of basic skills required for a successful vocal and instrumental chamber music performance.

This paper focuses on the development of comprehensive chamber music and ensemble skills, and the improvement of musicianship in relation to this.

Performance and stagecraft skills, including movement, dialogue learning, stage presence and backstage etiquette will all be studied through the Vocal stream.

Voice students will primarily be taught in Te Whare with performances and dress rehearsals held in the Gallagher Concert Chamber. These teaching sessions will normally require all students to be present. During this session, Voice students will also look at the fundamental elements of working together in a production, with stagecraft and movement introduced.

Instrumental students will be taught as a member of a chamber ensemble, with each group receiving and performing in 8 masterclass or individual coaching sessions per trimester.

Students will be taught as a member of a chamber ensemble, with each group receiving a minimum of 9 coaching or combined class sessions per trimester.

Instrumental and Vocal students will be assessed for their chamber performances across the year. For Vocal students, these may include the Oratorio concert, Opera/Opera Showcase and the Music Theatre Showcase, and other concerts including external concerts and the Carnival of Music. Progress assessments will be graded on attendance to rehearsals, which can fall outside of lecture times, and on commitment to each chamber rehearsal and class, regardless of whether a lecturer is present or not.

All students are required to be present at all rehearsals, coaching sessions and performances.

Vocal students, and Instrumental groups are required to perform a minimum of twice per trimester in the general Performance Workshop 1-2.30 Fridays.

Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a range of chamber music skills.

    These should include:

    - Ensemble skills such as listening/ reacting to other group members with regard to ensemble, style, articulation, dynamic, intonation

    -Stylistic understanding of the chamber works studied, and the ability to portray this to an appropriately high level in performance

    -Basic understanding of group intonation

    -Individual technical skills appropriate to the work performed

    -The ability to give a competent performance of a chamber work

Extensive and intelligent listening to recordings and concerts is one of the primary tools for developing musicianship. Daily listening to RadioNZ Concert should be undertaken. Students should use the online resource Naxos Music Library and the library CD collection as well as attend Wednesday lunchtime concerts, NZSO concerts (Founders Theatre), and all Chamber Music New Zealand concerts. Students are encouraged to make an effort to attend NZ Opera performances (held in Auckland).

Workload

On a weekly basis, students should expect to attend regular coaching sessions, Friday Performance Workshop 1- 2.30. Instrumental students should have a minimum of two two-hour group rehearsals per week, and an additional hour of individual practice. Singers should expect to spend two hours per week on individual study, with group rehearsals also arranged, and attended.

Self directed study is expected to undertake this paper, and organised classes and coaching will also take place, but will not be the only arrangement for studying this paper.
