POPST302 aims to support students to develop their interest in demography, population studies and population research. The course is designed to give students a firm grounding in the methods used in population studies and their applications.

The paper covers: sources of demographic data, fertility, mortality, life course events, internal migration, international migration, depopulation, deterministic population projections, and population policy.

This paper is entirely internally assessed (1:0). Assessment includes twelve quizzes, five workshops, one report outline and one final report.

POPST302 is a 15 point paper at level three. Students are expected to do 8-10 hours per week (over the 14 week semester) of study, reading, writing and practice in data manipulation in addition to the following activities in class:

Weekly lectures: 12 x 2 = 24 hours

Workshop sessions: 5 x 2 = 10 hours

This paper makes use of the following assessments:

  1. Twelve weekly review quizzes (2% each, 24% in total).These will comprise a small number of multi-choice and/or quizzes relevant to the lecture material and/or readings of the week it is due (see schedule).Quizzes will open Wed at 12 noon and close two days later on Fri at 11am.
  2. Five workshop reports (6% each, 30% in total).
  3. Research report submitted in two parts:
    1. Report outline(10%)
    2. Final report (36%)

Report overview

Further details will be provided in class.You will be required to complete and submit two parts of the research report comprising:

  1. An outline for your final report (max. two pages), including background, sub-headings, and bullet-pointed content
  2. A full report of 2,000-2,500 max. words

Marks will be awarded for:

●Demonstrating your ability to identify and source appropriate data;

●Presenting data and describe findings;

●Using your findings to draw relevant policy based conclusions and recommendations;

●Identifying any limitations of your report or areas for further research;

●Presenting a report which is well structured.
