This paper introduces project management through a practical orientation. This paper builds on the technical skills taught in PRMGT301/MGSYS300. But, it focuses on the 'soft' skills required for successful project management. Topics covered include: project selection, leadership, ethics, team management and outsourcing. This course will also introduce the Agile project methodology.

More and more organisations are using project management methods in order to survive and prosper in today's competitive world. This paper is targeted at developing understanding about key issues in the use of project management in business with a particular focus on the systems, processes and people issues that are central to all project management. This is relevant to many business subject areas, such as marketing, accounting, manufacturing and communications. This knowledge will be of particular relevance to students who, after graduation, will be working in project-based environments. Students from any academic background should find this paper valuable in day-to-day life and in their future careers.

Three levels of competency are addressed in the paper:

  1. I know.
  2. I can do.
  3. I can adapt to new situations.

Topics are delivered via readings, forum discussions, practical exercises, case studies, and videos. Questions and discussions are strongly encouraged via the discussion forums. The lecturer will guide learning and facilitate the forum discussions. Students are expected to take the major responsibility for their own learning.
