The objective of this paper, Cognitive Psychology and Development, is to provide students with an overview of current concepts, methods and theories in cognitive and developmental psychology. Cognitive psychology is the study of cognitive processes (such as memory, attention, language, and decision making). and developmental psychology is the scientific study of how and why human beings change over the course of their life with a special focus on cognitive development for this paper.

The lectures for this paper are run in a webinar format. That means lectures will be delivered in person three times per week (Monday, Tuesday, and Friday) with the option for you to livestream them on Zoom and ask questions from wherever you might be. The lectures will also be recorded with Panopto and posted on the Moodle page (but simply watching the recordings will not give you a chance to fully participate. The laboratories will give you a chance learn how to do psychology research Laboratories will be delivered in person (so you can collect data from your classmates) with a few on-line /livestream sessions (but you will need to use some remote access apps to do the experiments). Tests, quizzes, lecture notes and laboratory handouts will all be available on-line via the Moodle web page.

Assessment

The assessment for this paper will be based on three on-line tests (worth 25% each for a total of 75%), five short on-line quizzes (each worth 2% for a total of 10%), and three laboratory reports summarising the laboratory demonstrations (worth 5% each for a total of 15%). Make-up tests are not given except by arrangement with the lecturer prior to the test. There is no external examination for the paper and grades will be allocated in accordance with the standard University grading system. Students needing to request an extension of time for any piece of assessment must do so on the School of Psychology’s Extension Request Form, before the due date.

The on-line tests will be held on-line during the class meeting times. These are "power tests" with a limited amount of time available to complete them. The on-line quizzes can be completed any time during the week they are assigned. The laboratory reports should be submitted via the Moodle web page through the Turnitin software.
