This course is intended to give students an introduction to behavioural psychology and to the psychology of perception. Students will learn about human and animal sensation, perception, and associated perceptual processes. They will also learn about the philosophy behind the behavioural approach to psychology, the basic principles of behaviour analysis, and how those principles can be applied to issues of clinical and community importance.

Online Activities

  • Online activities relevant to the upcoming lecture content, such as brief videos and exercises, will be available for some topics, as specified on Moodle.
  • An online quiz on the contents of the readings relevant to the upcoming lectures, online activity material, and/or the previous lecture contents must be completed prior to the lecture.

Lectures

  • Lecture notes will be available on Moodle prior to the lecture.
  • You are encouraged to attend the lectures live, in-person or online, as this is where the course materials will be explored and you will have the opportunity to interact with the instructor and other students and gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
  • Lectures will be streamed via zoom for online participants and for students at the Tauranga campus.
  • Lectures will be recorded with Panopto and made available on Moodle.

Laboratories

  • Practicals will be assigned for completion in your own time with support from the instructors and sessional assistants.
  • Regular tutorial sessions will be held in which you can receive help with practical assignments and course materials.

Tests

  • Two tests will be administered, one dedicated to the material associated with perception, the other dedicated to the material associated with behavioural psychology (there is no exam associated with this paper).

  • All information and announcements regarding the course will be posted on Moodle.
  • All digital communication regarding the course occurs via Moodle.

Up to 4% worth of course credit can be obtained by participating in research undertaken by students or staff of the University of Waikato or by completing a text based research exercise. These course credits cannot be used to change your overall grade from a fail to a pass, but may be used to increase your grade, for example, from a B to a B+. Typically you will be offered 1% course credit for participating. Relevant projects are advertised on Psych Café (under Research Participation).

For the perception portion of the paper, all required readings will be made available on Moodle. These may include book chapters, original research articles, or other materials relevant to the lecture topics.

For the behavioural portion of the paper, you should purchase or otherwise get access to the following book:

For the Perception part of the paper, the notes are mainly taken from a textbook called Sensation and Perception, 9th or 10th edition, by E. B. Goldstein. The lecture notes are based on the textbook, and most of the figures used in the lectures come from the textbook. (The 8th edition is fine for general background material, but note that page and figure numbers may differ from those given in the lecture notes). If you have missed a lecture, or have not understood something in a lecture, the textbook is a good resource. It also provides a good overview of topics, and will be very useful for students who go on to study the area of perception at higher levels. The Test 1 will be based on the material presented in the lectures and practicals, and will not include questions based on material in the textbook that has not been covered in lectures.

For the Behavioural part of the paper, the quiz items and much of the lecture content is from the following book:
