The aim of the paper is to facilitate students‘ understanding of the concept of abnormal behaviour, as well as describing and critiquing the traditional Western approach to the classification and diagnosis of mental disorders. Clinical features of a range of psychological disorders are explored and include such issues as aetiology, assessment, and treatment. The primary aim is to provide students with an understanding of how some of the most commonly seen psychopathologies present and how they are understood and treated in a clinical setting.

Final assessment
This final assessment, which will count for 33 percent of your final mark, will include both multiple-choice and short answer questions. The multiple-choice questions will be based on the text book and the short answer questions will be based on lecture material. The final assessment will take place during the exam period. Further Information will be provided in Moodle.

The assignments will derive from issues highlighted in the text and the final assessment will relate to material presented in this text. It is important that you access the 8th edition of this textbook as it is required reading for the final assessment.

Recommended resources
Over the course of this paper, you will be exposed to recommended readings to develop your specific interests further. These suggested references are not compulsory for this course, however students will benefit if they familiarise themselves with clinical psychology journals and read beyond the set readings for their writing assignments, and to follow up on individual questions and interests. In reading and considering material, students are expected to reflect on the impact of cultural differences, as well as the complex interplay of psychological, biological, and social factors.
