What this paper is about
This paper is one of the work-integrated learning (WIL) options for the BSc degree. All students are required to undertake at least one WIL paper as part of their degree. This paper is offered in both the B and C Trimester. Within each offering, students can preference one of several capstone Projects. For each Project, students will be placed into student groups. Some Projects will have entry requirements (e.g., a requirement of completion of a particular paper), these will be detailed within the Project information on the MyWIL platform.
Student will undertake a group project lead by an academic staff member and involve engaging with people external to the university. The projects will be applied in nature and in the past have included projects such as gully restoration, river modelling for community groups, science in primary schools, and investigations at ecological reserves.
The projects provide students an opportunity to apply their science knowledge to practice that is of benefit for the community.
How this paper will be taught
Student will undertake a group project, where available projects will vary each year. Students will be able to preference their choices of projects through the MyWIL platform. Notification will occur through the MyWIL platform for when it is time to 'preference' choices for projects. Please note, in the past most students were given their first preference, however, this cannot be guaranteed and will depend on the number of students preferencing a project and prerequisites requirements. If a student misses out on their first preference, the student will automatically be given their second preference.
Some projects will have additional costs to the student (e.g. the Chatham Island project), this will be clear prior to preferencing. If students do not make a preference, we will assign the project to the student.
Students will work as groups on their projects, where the groups will be made up of science students undertaking a diverse range of science majors. Each project will have an academic staff member as a Project Lead. How the project work is undertaken will vary depending on the nature of the project, where some may have weekly scheduled contact time and laboratory work whilst others may have a block of contact time (e.g., a whole week during Teaching Recess).
The projects will require students to engage with people external to the university (e.g., a client, community groups, wider community) and likely involve some time spent off-campus.
For more information about the projects, please refer to the MyWIL platform and details within. Projects will be available for viewing about two months prior to commencing.
Because each Capstone Project is unique, scheduled contact time will vary between projects. For details, please read the Supplementary Project Outline on the My WIL platform.
Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:
Assessments
How you will be assessed
All Capstone Projects are 100% internally assessed. However, there are different internal assessment items for each Projects to reflect the nature of that Project. Please read the Supplementary Project Outline for details about the specific assessment tasks for your project on both the MyWIL platform and the paper Moodle page.
All assessment information will be made available on the paper Moodle page. No assessment item will be worth more than 35% of the total paper assessment. Generally, there is at least one assessment item that requires reflection on professional development and one assessment item that is a final report or product for an external client or community.
The internal assessment/exam ratio (as stated in the University Calendar) is 100:0. There is no final exam.
