Paper Description
This paper follows on from SPAN231 and further develops skills in reading, writing, speaking and understanding spoken Spanish through a variety of interactive learning methods and materials. It also offers a deeper appreciation of the different Hispanic cultures.
Using a communicative approach, students will be able to master simple grammatical structures, and will acquire a good level of cultural competence involving international competence (communicative abilities in Spanish including knowledge of sociocultural uses of the language, pragmatics, and cultural background/perspectives), and metalinguistic competence (awareness of language as a conceptual, symbolic system)
This course aims to be approximately equivalent to the international standard with reference to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of –B1.
Participation is an essential component of the course and does not refer exclusively to attendance.

Assessment
Language learning, in particular, requires continuous practice. Since it is a process that relies on active participation on the part of the learner, do not expect to master the material simply by coming to class for three hours a week. In order to perform well in this course, your at-home effort is essential. (Workbook, quizzes, etc)
The focus of your attention should be on classroom activities while you are in class.Cellphones, and outside reading materials are NOT allowed in class, as they limit your participation and are also generally disruptive and disrespectful.
The presence of any items such as these will lower your participation grade substantially.
Participation on the tutorials are also expected
Assessment Components
The internal assessment/exam ratio (as stated in the University Calendar) is 100:0. There is no final exam.
