This paper explores the world of management in organisations and provides a realistic introduction to the essential functions of management. It starts with managing self, before managing teams, and finally organisations. It reviews the manager's role in organisations today, together with an understanding of how managers and firms need to adapt to an ever-changing environment. Using the case teaching method, students develop a critical awareness that in every situation, issue, or problem, managing is a mixture of artful and scientific decision-making that requires the application of analytical and interpersonal skills.

This is a FLEXI paper which means the teaching is delivered on campus but is set up so a student can complete the paper without attending in person, including tests. It is offered face to face and in FLEXI mode. All lectures will be recorded, and specific (online) tutorials will be set up for students who cannot attend the on-campus tutorials.

Students will be able to make a choice on Moodle whether they will participate in the course face to face or online. However, If a student selects 'online' they are expected to join a group, communicate with the lecturer and tutor regularly and participate. If the student wishes to change their choice once the trimester has begun, they will need to email the Convenor for approval.

This paper has one 2-hour lecture and one 2-hour scheduled tutorial per week. Students will participate (online or face-to-face) both in lectures and tutorials through class discussions, exercises, a quiz, a team report, a team presentation and an online test.

If you have any questions, please contact your lecturer (Antoine: antoine.gilbert-saad@waikato.ac.nz), or your tutor.
