This paper focuses attention on curriculum and pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning with infants and toddlers from birth to three years.

The objectives of this paper are to help students to:

(a) understand the key characteristics of infants and toddlers, and consider what their education and care involves in early childhood education settings

(b) critically reflect on the role of the teacher when working with infants and toddlers, and their families/whānau

This paper provides further opportunities for students to develop the skills, attributes and knowledge that relate to: building positive relationships and working collaboratively with children, families/whanau and colleagues; performing confidently in early childhood education settings; and beginning to systematically and critically engaging with evidence to reflect on and refine their professional practice of teaching. Students completing this paper also develop:

  • Standards for the Teaching Profession: 1.1, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 3.1, 3.4, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.6, 5.1, 5.3, 5.4, 6.3, 6.4, 6.5.
  • Cultural competencies of wananga, whanaungatanga, tangata whenuatanga, manaakitanga and ako as outlined in Tataiako: Cultural competencies for teachers of Maori learners. Specific competencies addressed in this paper are: W1, W2, W4, WH1, M1, M2, M3, M4, TW1, A2, A3, A4.

Paper Structure

The paper is taught in B trimester in weekly three hour face-to-face classes. Classes will involve interactive sessions and be supported by content available in Moodle, the Learning Management System used at the University of Waikato and in the Reading List.

A number of texts, required readings and audio visual resources will be used to expand on the issues related to infants and toddlers in early childhood education settings in this paper.

Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:

    • demonstrate an in-depth understanding of theoretical, pedagogical and philosophical research relating to effective learning and teaching of infants and toddlers in the NZ ECE context
    • identify quality features of infant and toddler pedagogy in relation to the role of the teacher and the environment
    • draw on contemporary literature and real-world experience to demonstrate a reflective, evidence-based understanding of the role of the early childhood teacher in supporting the learning and development of under three-year-olds, and their families.
    • demonstrate an applied understanding of the ways in which relationships are played out in, and impact on, infant and toddler learning.
