This paper provides students with an opportunity to learn about the tourism industry, and to appreciate the different management issues from a tourism perspective. The paper enhances the capabilities of students to understand and critically analyse issues relating to sustainable management, planning and development of tourism. This paper also provides an opportunity to consider concepts and characteristics of tourism in the communities and environments that it effects and explores the nature and characteristics of tourists.

This Level 5 paper provides an in-depth analysis of the linkages between sustainable tourism development and impacts of tourism at the destination, activities (attraction, events, accommodation, food and beverage, transportation and amenities, and technologies such as the Internet, etc.) and the trends and themes of the tourist resources. The paper also provides analysis of tourist operations, challenges and the future of tourism.

ACTIVITIES

I believe in active learning and give due recognition to participants’ point of view based on previous learning or work experience. The paper consists of components such as lectures, discussions, case studies, assignments, participation and presentation in a syndicate or individual to achieve the learning objectives of the course. Any or all relevant materials, readings, etc. will be used to enhance the learning experience of the participants. You are encouraged to participate in all learning activities of the session.

Hence the session structure is expected to enable students to:

  • Gain a greater appreciation of the key issues,
  • Develop appropriate reading of journal articles for each topic with help from lecturer,
  • Develop an awareness of Tourism management for advancement,
  • Develop critical and analytical skills,
  • Improve the skills required in preparing and presenting written and oral materials.
  • Actively participate in discussion and debate over contemporary issues in Tourism development and environment.

Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:

  • Learning Outcomes

    This paper is offered from the perspective of tourism development and environment management. It will examine systems and tools for the improvement of tourism industry, its operations and impacts on society, environment and sustainability. A practical approach will be taken and issues will be considered from the perspective of "...why should tourism operators be familiar with such issues, and what practical benefit will such knowledge give to the tourism industry?"

    Note: Participants should keep this perspective in mind when examining each issue in this paper, preparing and presenting work for assessments. On completion of this paper participants should be able to from a management viewpoint:

    1. Identify and analyse linkage between tourism themes, concepts and issues.
    2. Scrutinise and evaluate systems and tools for development and operation of the tourism industry.
    3. Identify and describe the social, cultural, environmental and economic impacts of tourism development.
    4. Evaluate and synthesise trends and themes in the use of tourist resources.
    5. Critically analyse tourism planning and development in terms of its characteristics and future outlook.
    6. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a diverse business clientele.
    Current issues in managing tourism development effectively will be included in class discussion as they arise during the semester.

15. Plagiarism

Purpose Statement:

To ensure that students are aware that plagiarism is a disciplinable offence, and to provide them with the skills to avoid undertaking plagiarism the University and School have policies and procedures to protect and educate students and staff.

Policy:

1. Plagiarism means "presenting as one's own work the work of another, and includes the copying or paraphrasing of another person's work in an assessment item without acknowledging it as the other person's work through full and accurate referencing; it applies to assessment presented through a written, spoken, electronic, broadcasting, visual performance or other medium." (University of Waikato, Assessment Regulations).

2. Plagiarism is prohibited by University regulations and is a disciplinable offence. (Refer to the Assessment Regulations clause 8.2 and 8.3 located in the Calendar). A breach of the Assessment Regulations is defined as misconduct under the Discipline Regulations (clause 6(2)(d).).

3. Disciplinary action taken against students established as having plagiarised will be determined by the extent of the plagiarism and the standard of scholarship reasonably expected of the student given their level within the University. A lack of awareness of the regulations relating to plagiarism will not be accepted as an acceptable defence to a plagiarism charge.

4. Discipline action taken against students suspected of plagiarism or cheating must be dealt with under the University Discipline and Assessment regulations. Within the School only chief examiners/chairpersons may be delegated authority to impose penalties for plagiarism or other breaches of the Discipline and Assessment regulations (see procedure below). Individual staff members cannot alter grades in order to impose a penalty.

5. The School reserves the right to subject all assignments and other coursework submitted towards papers in the School to scrutiny via an electronic plagiarism detection tool.

6. It is the responsibility of each member of the academic staff to take reasonable steps to identify and report cases of plagiarism in the papers they are responsible for. This would normally involve reviewing the Turnitin reports associated with at least one piece of assessment in each paper.

Procedure:

1. Staff must ensure that students are aware of, and understand that it is the student's responsibility to read and act upon the University plagiarism policies and regulations. Similarly, it is the student's responsibility to read and act upon the School's policy and procedure. (A standard policy document is included in the common policies section of electronic paper outlines, and this manual is available to students via MyWeb).

2. Students will be required to submit all assignments having signed the following statement;

“I certify that this assignment is all my own work and does not include any copying or paraphrasing of another person's work. Where I have referred to another person's work I have referenced in accordance with Waikato Management School's referencing policy (as stated in the Waikato Management School Quality Assurance Manual.) I understand that Waikato Management School may submit this assignment to a web-based plagiarism detection tool and give permission for the assignment to be used in that way."

"I certify that no part of this assignment has already been counted for assessment in this paper or any other paper."

3. For assignments submitted in hard copy, students will be unable to print a cover sheet for the assignment without electronically signing this statement.

4. In the case of electronic submission students will be unable to submit the assignment without electronically signing this statement.

5. For group assignments the student printing the cover sheet or electronically submitting the assignment will be required to sign for the group.

6. If a student is suspected of plagiarism the Summary Jurisdiction process shall be followed in accordance with the University’s Student Discipline Regulations (Part 3 Clause 14 and 15):

Summary jurisdiction is described in the University Calendar as a process for dealing with a complaint of misconduct, where a designated person has authority, individually, to obtain and hear evidence, arrive at a judgement and, within the terms of that authority as defined in the Student Discipline Regulations 2008, impose a penalty (Student Discipline Regulations Part 1 Clause 4)

1) Summary jurisdiction may be delegated to Chief Examiners (for the School this means department chairs, and for Corporate & Executive Education this means the Director of the Centre for Corporate & Executive Education) with respect to cases of alleged plagiarism or cheating provided that:

a) the chief examiner has followed the process prescribed by the Chairperson of the Student Discipline Committee for requesting and exercising that delegated authority.

b) the complaint involves alleged plagiarism or cheating in a 100 or 200 level item of internal assessment which is worth less than 33% of the total assessment for the paper concerned.

c) the student who is the subject of the complaint has not previously been found guilty of misconduct under these regulations, and

d) the student against whom the complaint is made accepts the delegated authority of the chief examiner.

(Student Discipline Regulations Part 3 Clause 15)

If a suspected case meets all of the above criteria, chairpersons should follow procedures as detailed in the summary jurisdiction process. (Refer to the University Calendar Clause 15, Student Discipline Regulations). In all other circumstance the matter will be referred directly to the Chairperson, or through the Secretary, of the University Disciplinary Committee.

7. A Plagiarism Database will be maintained by the Manager of the University Assessment Office.

8. The School has purchased and operates a plagiarism detection tool. This tool works on assignments that have been submitted electronically and provides automatic bulk reports. Paper convenors will be advised of any cases picked up by the detection tool.

9. For assignments submitted as hard copy, via class forum or by e-mail individual assignment/s can be run through the tool on request by the paper convenor.

10. Students submitting research reports, directed studies, reports of an investigation, dissertations and theses for assessment are required to accept that they may be submitted to a plagiarism detection tool.

11. Supervisors of research reports, directed studies, reports of an investigation, dissertations and theses may request that they be submitted to a plagiarism detection tool. In cases in which the research is confidential the supervisor should request that when the item is submitted it is not stored on the eternal database used by the plagiarism detection tool.
