The paper gives opportunities for undergraduate students studying across disciplines to develop their academic literacy skills.

The paper is divided into four modules:

  • Module 1: The building blocks of academic writing
  • Module 2: Key language functions
  • Module 3: Research, reading and referencing
  • Module 4: Essays and reports

The NET version of this paper comprises online lectures and online activities.

NET students are to view the weekly lecture recording available through Moodle, uploaded after the each lecture, and complete the specific online activities for NET students each week. The lecture is run on Mondays from 11.00am-12.00pm at Hamilton campus, and the recording is made available immediately after this in Moodle.

Scheduled Zoom drop-in sessions will also be held each week. These will be run by Laura or another member of the teaching team. NET students are welcome to drop into these sessions to ask questions about paper content and assessment. No new information will be presented during the Zoom drop-ins. Times and Zoom links will be provided in Moodle once the paper commences.

Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:

  • Identify the purpose, topic, audience and underlying macrostructure of different text types associated with online and written academic communication.

Assessment for the paper includes:

  • Four online quizzes
  • One writing portfolio, comprising three annotated texts
  • A literature critique of three academic sources
  • A final essay or report (students will select which to complete)
